Drift HD First Impressions…
After a long anticipated wait, Drift Innovation are finally releasing the “GoPro Hero killing”, compact sized action camera called the “Drift HD”.
What first strikes you about the new Drift HD is the size. It’s just a quarter the size of the regular sized Drift HD170 Stealth and Drift HD170. But it looks smaller than that. It can easily fit in the palm of your hand.
Drift Innovations had hit cameras with their previous products, the HD170 and HD170Stealth which set the standard for HD action cameras, but they did receive some flack because of the big and bulky size.
But you can’t blame the Drift HD for being too bulky. It’s got all the same awesome features of the HD170 Stealth but 25% smaller in size and weight.
GoPro cameras have always been a favorite for their tiny size and quality video, but GoPro’s future is now under sever threat because this revolutionary new, palm sized Drift HD is making waves and is looking to become a big hit in the market.
The new small size is by far the best improvement we can see right off the bat, but it’s not only the smaller size that this new mini action camera has going for it.
New Features of the small “Drift HD”
While they’ve maintained many of the old awesome, unique features and specs that Drift Innovation cameras are famous for, they’ve introduced a handful of new improved features to make this one their best yet.
- New compact design – 25% smaller and lighter than previous models (4.1 inches long and 4.23 oz)
- Replaceable lens cover – in case of drops and breakages, it’s easy to replace
- Can take 9MP still photographs – unique to Drift HD
- New goggle strap design (for less movement)
- Screw-on back panel – interchangeable for better water resistance
- External mic jack – internal mic is also still there
- HDMI output for direct TV viewing on HDTV
Other ‘Kick-Ass’ Drift Innovation Features Carried Over From Previous Model
- Full HD 1080p recording at 25/30 fps
- 720p 25/30/50/60 fps for extremely smooth slow-motion
- 1.5″ color LCD screen – for playback and lining up the frame
- Supports Micro SD up to 32 GB
- Wireless remote – 5 meters / 30ft range
- Rotatable 170 degrees lens – handy for unusual mounting positions
- Lithium battery lasts up to 2.5 hrs of continuous recording
- Night mode for low light situations
- Digital zoom (if you need it – but not recommended as video quality decreases)
- Pairing of remote to multiple cameras – use 1 remote to control all
- Water resistant – dunk proof, splash proof, dirt, snow resistant (optional waterproof case available)

Contour+ Plus (Bluetooth, GPS equipped)
As you can see by this comparison chart, there are a lot of similarities in these cameras in terms of HD video quality of video and photos. The big differences come with design and useability features.
What really sets the Drift HD apart from the GoPro and Contour cameras is that it has a built-in LCD color screen, remote control, rotating lens that is replaceable and is super light.
The price is a little more than the GoPro but for $70, you get all those other cool unique features that the GoPro doesn’t have.
As far as mounts go, the Drift HD comes with a handful of various mounts you can use straight out of the box on your helmet, goggles or to stick right on the side of your car or bike.
It also has a screw in thread in the bottom for use with tripods or suction mount (suction mounts sold separately).
Here’s what you get in the box you get…
- Drift HD Action Camera
- Remote Control & Velcro Strap
- Interchangeable Rear Port Access cover
- Improved Goggle Mount
- Curved and Flat adhesive mounts
- Universal Clip
- Velcro Strap
- Rechargeable Lithium Battery
- USB Cable (for recharging and uploading files)
- HMDI cable (for TV viewing)
- Drift Innovation Quick Start Guide
- Use Manual
- 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty
The Drift HD definitely is a step up from the previous versions from Drift Innovation. It’s looking to be a real game changer in the action camera market.
It’s now directly competing with GoPro as the world’s best palm-sized compact action camera.
The price of the Drift HD is a little more than the GoPro Hero but for all the extra features, especially the color screen and remote (and the many others), it’s definitely worth the few extra dollars.
